Flechs.bet lies at the intersection of visual communication design and a classic but niche table top miniatures game. Here you will find a collection of utilities, material, ideas, and cricital writing exploring issues of information design, interactive design, user interface design. and game design within the context of Battletech.
Battletech itself is a rule-laden and statistically dense example of both the genera and the aesthetic tastes of a niche of 80′s American board game design. While the game allows for rich decision making and compelling play, its 30+ year old roots make it relatively slow, difficult, and narratively impenetrable for contemporary audiences. I’ve come to view it as an interesting information design problem: How do you retain the complexity and aesthetics of a game that provides for rich and fascinating decision making while making it more accessible to new and more casual audiences.
